Equally adept in the wet as it is in the dry.

Cons

Hard to find as it was only available exclusively from Schwinn Signature independent bike shops

Final Verdict

The Schwinn Moab 3 is a great little mountain bike that is equally adept in the wet as it is in the dry. Featuring a 24-speed SR Suntour/Shimano drivetrain that provides for easy climbing and Tektro disc brakes for amazing stopping power – you have an all round excellent mountain bike for beginner or intermediate riders. Great entry level 29er and fantastic value at this price.

The Schwinn Moab 3 hardtail mountain bike is a bike designed for cross-country riding, with its 29-inch wheels and its sturdy aluminum frame. Sporting an SR Suntour XCM suspension form with 100 mm of travel, the bike can really cope with rugged terrain with its 29er tires smoothly gliding over anything we threw at it. In fact, we think this may be the best mountain bike under $500

The Schwinn Moab 3 is also a fairly “scarce” mountain bike as it was not sold through big-box retailers, but rather it was/is only available exclusively from Schwinn Signature independent bike shops. So you may see some second hand Schwinn Moab 3 mountain bikes for sale, but probably not as many as some of the other brands in this same price bracket. The one benefit of only being sold through Schwinn Signature independent bike shops is that you might actually have only one of a few in your town, whereas the converse to that is also true, in that if you are after this specific model, there are not that many Schwinn Signature independent bike shops about so you may struggle to find a stockist.

Schwinn Moab – Components / Specifications

Nonetheless, now that we know where to get it, let’s talk about what we like on the Schwinn Moab mountain bikes. We’ve already discussed the sturdy Schwinn® MTB trail aluminum frame and the SR Suntour® XCM suspension fork, but the bike is also fitted with Tektro® Novela mechanical disc brakes. We took the bike on some hairy downhills and we were not disappointed, the Tektro disc brakes provided increased stopping power in most conditions and at all times we felt in control of the bike on steep descents and the braking power was available if required.

In terms of the drivetrain, the Schwinn Moab 3 comes with Shimano Alivo® front derailleur and Shimano Altus® rear derailleur components as well as a 24-speed drivetrain that provided for reliable and efficient gear shifting. The smooth rolling is provided by Innova 29er MTB tires and we felt that the tires really offered a degree of high-traction confidence.

Schwinn rounds out the Moab with their comfy grips and flat seating and lightweight post, stem, and bars as well as solid-footing platform pedals – and all round great mountain bike for beginners to intermediate riders.
